Biographical Information

The Bernards were a prominent family in Buckingham County, Virginia. John Bernard was born in 1736 in Gloucester County, Virginia. He moved to Cumberland County, Virginia, and married Henningham Carrington (1746-1810), the daughter of George Carrington (1711-1785). He moved to Buckingham County where he became one of the county's prominent citizens. He served as sheriff during the 1780s. He and his wife had five children who married into other local prominent families. The Bernards also speculated in lands in Kentucky.

Scope and Content Information

Papers, 1761-1800, of the Bernard family of Buckingham County, Virginia, consisting of accounts, affidavits, bonds, certificates, commissions, deeds, land grants, letters, lists, plats, powers of attorney, receipts, warrants, and writs. Many of the affidavits, certificates, land grants, letters, lists, plats, and powers of attorney concern the purchase, sale, and ownership of land in Virginia and Kentucky, including two volumes listing military land warrant claims. Other accounts, letters, and lists concern the payment of levies and taxes on land and property in Buckingham County. Two deeds and a receipt refer to the purchases of slaves by John Bernard (1736-1799). Another deed concerns an apprenticeship of Wade Netherland with Samuel Ayres. Some accounts and bonds involve the payment of debts and fees; one bond is security for Cary Drew as deputy sheriff of Buckingham County. Several writs refer to criminal and civil court proceedings in Buckingham County. Two certificates recognize the election of David Bell (d. 1799) and Charles Patteson as delegates to the Virginia ratifying convention in 1788. There is a commission for William Bernard as lieutenant for the 1st Battalion, 24th Regiment, Virginia militia. Also a warrant for the formation of a slave patrol in Buckingham County.
