Biographical/Historical Information
Born in Cedar Bluff, Tazewell County, Virginia on 28 October 1873. Graduate of Emory and Henry College (1894); Washington and Lee University law school (1897); member of U.S. House of Representatives (1923- 1929); governor of Virginia (1934-1938). Died in Richlands, Virginia on 14 October 1952. Buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Tazewell County, Virginia.
Scope and Content Information
Includes personal and general correspondence, 1899-1928, containing information mostly on Peery's law practice in Wise and Tazewell County, Virginia; speeches, 1913-1943 and undated, to civic organizations in Virginia, as well as some campaign addresses; campaign files, 1922-1925, which include correspondence; miscellaneous records, including West Point and Naval Academy appointments, 1924-1927, and information on Peery's residence in Wise, Virginia, dated 1908-1909; and scrapbooks.
