Scope and Content

Manuscript copy of acts passed at a General Assembly at the Capitol in Williamsburg, Virginia, 23 October 1705-June 1706 in an attempt begun in 1699 to revise the laws then in force. Acts concern ports and towns, the Capitol and Williamsburg, titles to town lands, tobacco and size and tare (weight) of tobacco hogsheads, ships sailing in contempt of embargoes, marriage and slavery. Incomplete and imperfect.

Historical Information

The Virginia General Assembly is the legislative body of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its existence dates from the establishment of the House of Burgesses at Jamestown in 1619. It became the General Assembly in 1776 with the ratification of the Virginia Constitution.
